Introduction
—The 21st Century Snow Woman by International Filmmaker Nozomi Sugino Is Born Here— Written by Yakumo Koizumi more than 100 years ago, “Ghost Stories” is a work that sublimates legends from various parts of Japan into monster literature. This work is a film adaptation of one of them, “Snow Woman,” by Nozomi Sugino with her own interpretation. Sugino, who had long been anxious to make a film as his third film as a director, following “Manga Meat and Me” and “Desire,” took on the dual role of Yuki and Yuki himself. In the role of the main character, Minoyoshi, Takataka Aoki, who is remarkably active, and Mayu Yamaguchi, a young man who is attracting attention for his daughter Ume. Shiro Sano, Yoshiko Miyazaki, Takeshi Yamamoto, and Hirohiro Matsuoka are all acting and young performers are on the sidelines, and veteran Kumi Mizuno is the main force. The cinematographer is Shogo Ueno, the art is by Masami Tanaka under Yohei Taneda, and the music is by SOWJOW, who has been involved in most of Sugino’s works. With the full cooperation of Sugino’s hometown of Hiroshima Prefecture, the entire film was shot in Hiroshima Prefecture and in the Hiroshima dialect, centering on Onomichi City, which is known as a city of movies. The film was selected for the 29th Tokyo International Film Festival, and was highly acclaimed for its visual beauty of snow and light, its classical aesthetic, and its innovative attempt to make use of tradition in the modern age.
